Winter Session After School Student Enrichment Classes

Welcome to the Fernwood Elementary PTSA After School Enrichment classes!  We are pleased to offer an exciting lineup of after school classes this Winter.  All signups are to be completed online at 6crickets.com for the Winter Session. For all classes, there will be a lottery if registration exceeds the class maximum. You will be notified via e-mail whether or not your child got into the requested class.  Registration will open on Wednesday, January 8, 2020 at 8:00am and will close Wednesday, January 15, 2020 at 11:59pm. Class descriptions, cost, along with registration information will be found on 6crickets.com by Monday, January 6, 2020.

All club payments are due no later than Monday, January 20, 2020.  If payment is not received by 11:59 PM, the child will lose their spot and the next one on the waitlist will be given the spot.  The student enrichment volunteers will not call, or email a reminder. Due to the large workload of the registration process, due dates are firm.

For Winter Enrichment Classes, Fernwood PTSA will be offering hardship scholarships. These scholarships are designed for families experiencing financial hardship and will provide the student with a 50% tuition scholarship.  All scholarship requests are confidential. Instructions for requesting Scholarships for students and their families are as described below:

  1. Request for scholarship should be made via email to fernwoodpanthers@gmail.com. In the subject line, please type “WINTER ENRICHMENT - REQUEST FOR SCHOLARSHIP”.
  2. Scholarship funds are limited to one scholarship per student for the year.  Not all requests may be granted.

  •  Parent Volunteers

Each class must have a parent volunteer who is a PTSA member present. We cannot have class without one. The job of the volunteer is to remain in the student enrichment class to support the instructor and students. Scholarships (provided by class vendor, excluding Spanish - Foreign Language for Youth) are available to student(s) of the PTSA enrichment volunteer. Please contact melissa.lane79@gmail.com if you are interested in volunteering.

  •  Snack Policy

Please remember that all Fernwood PTSA-run clubs are peanut-free zones. Snacks for enrichment classes are allowed, but snacks must be peanut-free. In the event there is a special need for allergy awareness that is potentially dangerous to a child in a specific class, then a note will be sent to all parents of that class advising of the policy. Our priority is everyone’s safety.

Lego Engineering

This 1-hour class will introduce your child to the world of STEM by covering fascinating topics! Students will learn a new Scientific Concept and get to build a LEGO Motorized Model demonstrating that principle, using Bricks4Kidz proprietary model plans. New Lessons...New Builds!

Rainy Day Dinner Club

Each week, students learn basic cooking skills while making dinner for their family! Students will create delicious dishes?focusing on the importance of local ingredients, scratch cooking, and natural preservatives?while practicing knife skills and kitchen safety.? We use the perspective of food, cooking, and nutrition to learn about geography, math skills, science, and culture, while helping kids develop a lifelong love of fresh ingredients. Each entrée will serve 4 to 6 and will be packaged in oven-ready cookware with baking instructions.

Aspiring Authors

Using a unique two brain approach in a positive and friendly environment, students are inspired to write and “publish” their own book. This is a fun and challenging eight-week adventure where each student will be an author, editor, and artist “hired” by the publishing company to create their masterpieces. As a company, Grasshopper will assemble and bind the books creating professional results*. Students will learn how to use the elements of story building to captivate their readers and enhance their illustrations to make their words come alive. Their books will be a treasure to cherish. In a culminating activity, we will have an evening with parents and friends to “Celebrate the Authors”.

Animation Maker

Enter the world of movie and game animations! Students will learn the core skills of creating simple animated movies, creating 2D and 3D characters and animating those. Take your learning beyond stop-motion animation with real animation design tools. You will get to create real computer graphics and build animations like the pros!

Chess Wizards

If you enjoy playing chess or would like to learn how to play, join Chess Wizards as students learn from one of the premier chess education companies. New students will learn basic rules of chess, while more experienced students will learn strategy and sharpen their skills. Students will be divided into groups according to their chess experience. At the end of the season, each student will have had the chance to participate in a mini-chess tournament.
